South Korea’s court upholds President Park’s impeachment

South Korea’s Constitutional Court on Friday upheld the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, removing her from office over a corruption scandal involving conglomerates that has lasted for months.

Park committed a “grave” violation of the law through leaking classified documents to her confidante Choi Soon-sil, according to the ruling. “The president marred the rule of law and representative democracy with her anti-constitutional, anti-legal deeds,” court president Lee Jung-mi (pictured) wrote, adding that she clearly betrayed the trust of the people.

The ruling means that Park must immediately leave her presidential residence in Seoul, and it triggers a presidential election within 60 days, according to the constitution.
