TransCanada receives go-ahead for Keystone XL

TransCanada Keystone Pipeline L.P. received a presidential permit to “construct, connect, operate, and maintain pipeline facilities” at the border between the United States and Canada, the United States Department of State said in a release on Friday.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did not play any role in the decision-making process due to his previous engagement with Exxon Mobil, so Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas A. Shannon, Jr. issued the presidential permit after considering “a range of factors, including foreign policy, energy security, environmental and economic impacts.”

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in a tweet that President Donald Trump will discuss the pipeline later in the day.

Former president Barack Obama blocked the extension of the Keystone pipeline in 2015, citing environmental reasons.
