Sterling climbs to highest level since December

The British pound reached its highest level since December 13 on Tuesday, after Prime Minister Theresa May announced she will seek general elections on June 8. May cited divisions in Westminster over the government's Brexit plan as the main reason for her decision.

Sterling rallied 1.22% against the dollar to go for $1.272 at 3:13 pm CET and gained 0.75% compared to the euro, changing hands at €1.1896 at the same time. The currency advanced 0.73% compared to the Swiss franc and 1.09% relative to the Japanese yen.
