Trump: We will give good shot at renegotiating NAFTA

If unable to make a fair deal for the United States, NAFTA will be terminated, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday. Both President Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross have been highly critical of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, suggesting the US would pull out of the deal, however, earlier on Thursday the White House announced there would be no withdrawing from NAFTA for the time being.

The president said he had a change of heart after speaking with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the matter, and they told him “rather than terminating NAFTA, could you please renegotiate.” Prior to their conversation, Trump said that he was ready to end the deal in a couple of days’ time.

“I think we will be successful in renegotiating it,” the president told reporters in the White House, and added that the new deal must be “fair to the US.” If the renegotiating does not work out, the US will abandon NAFTA, however, he promised to “give it a good, strong shot.”
