Sterling tops $1.3 first time since September

The pound rallied on Thursday as statistics showed retail sales in Britain last month more than reversed the decline registered in March. Core volumes, stripped of fuel, saw a particular jump.

The currency of the United Kingdom jumped above $1.3, a level not seen since September 30. Sterling was 0.59% higher, buying $1.3046. The euro weakened 0.69% to £0.8545, more than offsetting the previous day's advance, after going for as low as £0.85402. The pound surged 0.73% to ¥144.7895.
