EU mulls low-polluting car quota from 2025: report

Vehicle manufacturers may face an obligatory share for the production of units with low greenhouse gas emissions, Handelsblatt reported on Monday, saying it learned the information from people close to policymakers in the European Commission. The European Union's executive arm is considering the possibility to introduce the system in 2025 and stimulate cleaner technologies such as those in electric cars, the article said. The measure could be unveiled by the end of this year, sources revealed.

Germany is coping with new controversies and legal action in relation to the Dieselgate scandal. National industry association VDA is opposing bans as carmakers have been calling for "measures that accelerate the market penetration of innovative products."
