Europe opens slightly lower as earnings come in

European markets opened in the red on Tuesday as investors focused on corporate earnings and economic data. Before the bell, Novartis announced its quarterly results and UniCredit released preliminary third-quarter earnings after accidentally publishing the figures on its website a day earlier. On the data front, traders are awaiting preliminary PMI figures due later in the day.

The FTSE 100 dipped 0.09% at 9:00 am CET. Whitbread led the losses as it dropped 2.82% at 9:03 am CET.

The DAX decreased 0.03% at 9:03 am CET. The worst performer was BASF which fell 0.75% at 9:07 am CET.

The CAC 40 was down 0.11% at 9:00 am CET. Renault fell 0.61% at 9:00 am CET with the carmaker scheduled to report third-quarter results today.

The euro gained 0.07% against the dollar to sell for 1.1758 at 9:00 am CET.
