Gas explosion in Austria kills one, injures 18

A gas pipeline explosion has occurred at an OMV gas pipeline hub in the Austrian town of Baumgarten an der March on Tuesday, local news reported. Initial reports suggested the blast left between 50 and 60 people injured, but German media reported that one person was killed and 18 were injured. Some 60 employees worked at the gas compressor station.

Ten fire engines, four ambulance vehicles, and rescue helicopters were at the scene of the incident, trying to help the wounded. Meanwhile, local police have urged citizens to avoid the area of the explosion and abide by instructions of authorities.

Spokesperson of the OMV, the largest oil company in central Europe, said that an investigation is being conducted in order to determine which part of the plant has been affected by the blast, adding that a criminal investigation has also started to determine what or who caused the incident.
