Zuma: Call for resignation is against ANC policy

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma responded on Wednesday to the ultimatum to resign by rejecting it and claiming it was "unfair," as he had intended to host a BRICS conference in July. The former head of the African National Congress party added he would have introduced Cyril Ramaphosa, its current chief and the country's deputy president, to the other leaders. Zuma, facing another no-confidence vote in parliament, said it is strange that he was told: "You now must go." This is not ANC policy, he asserted.

In a televised interview, the president confirmed other officials from the ruling party have asked him to leave and warned against having "two centers of power." In Zuma's words, he has proposed a timeframe for the process, where he would step down after June. Earlier in the day, the police arrested three people in a raid in the home of the Gupta family, which has controversial links with Zuma. The relationship was one of the factors that prompted the initiative to depose him.

The dollar traded down 0.85% at 11.8431 rand at 1:52 pm CET, after the South African currency rose to as much as 11.7926 against the greenback, the strongest point since May 2015.
