Dow closes at over one-month low amid market selloff

Markets in the United States closed sharply lower on Thursday with the Dow Jones ending the session at the lowest levels since early February as investors' fears of an impending trade war increased after US President Donald Trump announced new punitive trade measures against China. Markets were also weighed down by Facebook's extended losses during the session amid the social network's data breach scandal.

The Dow Jones closed below the 24,000-point mark for the first time since February 8 as the index dropped 2.93% or 723 points. The biggest losers were Caterpillar and Boeing which plummeted 5.71% and 5.19%, respectively.

The Nasdaq 100 slid 2.50% with Cintas, Baidu, BioMarin Pharmaceuticals and NetEase all plunging over 5%, while the S&P 500 lost 2.51%.

Facebook dived 2.66% after a Congress committee announced it will summon its CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify about the company's data breach scandal.

The euro was down 0.21% against the dollar to go for 1.2313 at 9:07 pm CET.
