Mattis: I believe chemical weapons were used in Douma

United States Defense Secretary spoke before the House Armed Services Committee on Thursday, when he stated that President Donald Trump has not made a decision on conducting airstrikes against the Syrian government forces. He believes that chemical weapons were used in the attack on a rebel enclave in Douma, citing "a lot of media and social media indicators," however, "actual evidence" is still being looked for.

The Defense Secretary vowed to inform congressmen in case a decision to strike Syria is made, while stressing that the president does not need the approval of Congress for the intervention. "We stand ready to provide military options if they're appropriate, as the president determined," he added.

Mattis underscored that the United States wants to deter the confrontation with Russia from "escalating out of control", and pointed out that Washington is "committed to ending that war through the Geneva process through the UN-orchestrated effort."
