US declares it wants to avoid conflict with Russia

The Department of State in Washington informed the United States Congress that the government doesn't want confrontation with Russia in Syria. A letter sent to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs by Wess Mitchell, assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, revealed the US forces in the war-torn country are, however, ready to react if necessary. He claimed the American side has put in an effort to avoid a conflict.

Mitchell accused Russian mercenaries in Syria of provocations against US troops on the ground. He added the coalition against the Islamic State would "weaken and defeat" the militant organization and act to bring stability and limit Iran's influence. The assistant state secretary called on the continuation of talks in Geneva.

Speaking on Wednesday at a hearing, he expressed concern about Turkey's offensive and advance in Afrin in northwest Syria in coordination with Russia.
