Kremlin files complaint at WTO against US tariffs

Following equivalent moves by China, India and the European Union, Russia filed a complaint on Thursday at the World Trade Organization against the decision by the United States to impose import tariffs for aluminum and steel products. The Kremlin demanded compensation as it asserted the move is in breach of rules and protectionist in nature, disputing claims by the government in Washington that the trade barriers were necessary for national security.

The tariffs are "in essence safeguard measures," the document said. Russia "has a substantial interest as exporter of the products" and therefore requests consultations with the US as soon as possible in order to, inter alia, "reach an understanding" in line with the WTO's framework, the complaint reveals.

Earlier, the US accepted China's request for consultations, while informing India and the EU it is ready to "discuss this or any other issue."
