Trump urges NATO states to boost defense spending

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that other member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should increase their defense spending. He pointed out Poland as an example of a country which is contributing more than the recommended 2% of their GDP to the organization.

"NATO is wonderful, but it helps Europe more than it helps us," Trump said at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "We have a far greater burden than we should," he added. Merkel responded by saying Germany will spend 1.3% of its GDP on defense in 2018. She acknowledged this "maybe not fast enough" for the US president, but agreed that her country's contribution will have to increase in the years to come. "We have to learn, as a big country and economically successful country, to assume our role," Merkel stated.
