Trump cancels June meeting with Kim Jong-un

United States President Donald Trump canceled on Thursday the meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. The president sent a letter to Kim in which he states his decision is based on "the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in [his] most recent statement" which caused him to "feel it is inappropriate, at this time" to go through with the summit. The letter seemingly referenced Pyongyang's earlier comments which notably called US Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" and his remarks "ignorant and stupid." Trump added it is "for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world" that the two countries will not meet. "You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used," he warned Kim.

"I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only that dialogue that matters, Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you," the president wrote, thanking the North Korean leader for releasing three US citizens who were detained in the country and calling it a "beautiful gesture." Finally, Trump expressed regret and called on Kim to contact him in the future. "If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. The missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history," the US president concluded.
