N. Korean official to fly to New York - reports

The top North Korean ruling party official, Kim Yong-chol (pictured right), who was reported to be heading for Washington, arrived in Beijing on Tuesday with a booked ticket for New York set to fly out the next day, South Korean media reported citing anonymous sources.

"I understand that Vice Chairman Kim Yong-chol has arrived in Beijing, will hold talks with Chinese officials at the airport and leave for the US tomorrow," a source who wanted to remain anonymous said.

Since the abrupt cancellation of the anticipated summit between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the two countries have resumed contacts trying to agree on the date and the details of the meeting. On Sunday, some US officials started direct talks with Pyongyang in the truce village of Panjunmon, just north of the border. Kim Yong-chol, a former intelligence chief, is expected to take part in the preparatory talks with US representatives ahead of the possible summit.
