Merkel hits back at Trump, says Germany independent from Russia

Responding to United States President Donald Trump's comments about Germany being "a captive of Russia," German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated on Wednesday at the NATO summit in Brussels that her country is now completely independent from Moscow and creates its policies and decisions on its own. "I have experienced myself how a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union," she told reporters. "I am very happy that today we are united in freedom, the Federal Republic of Germany. Because of that we can say that we can make our independent policies and make independent decisions."

The chancellor also said that Germany "does a lot" for NATO, despite Trump's recent accusations about Europe not paying enough for its defense. "Germany is the second largest provider of troops, the largest part of our military capacity is offered to NATO and until today we have a strong engagement towards Afghanistan. In that we also defend the interests of the United States," Merkel said.

Earlier today, during a breakfast with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump asserted that Russia will control 70% of the German territory once the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is completed. German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen responded by saying that the gas pipeline deal with Russia does not pose a threat to European security.
