Monsanto ordered to pay $289M in Roundup trial

Monsanto was ordered to pay $289.2 million in damages after a California jury found the agrochemical and agricultural company guilty in a case alleging its weed-killers caused cancer.

The lawsuit was filed by a school groundskeeper who claimed Monsanto's glyphosate-based herbicides Roundup and Ranger Pro caused him to get a terminal lymphoma. The jury said Monsanto didn't take adequate steps to warn of the consequences and dangers of using its products. The company faces similar allegations in several thousand lawsuits in the US.

Monsanto was acquired by Bayer earlier this year in a deal worth $66 billion and became a unit of the German pharma giant.
