WH: Tariffs on Turkey to remain even if pastor is released

The Trump administration "won't forget" how pastor Andrew Brunson is being treated by Turkey, White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders said at a press briefing on Wednesday. Ankara acted "very unfairly, very badly," towards the US preacher, Sanders added and pointed out Washington would be ready to look into lifting Ankara's sanctions in case of Brunson's release.

However, the press secretary noted that while the sanctions are specific to the Brunson case, tariffs introduced against Turkey are a matter of "national interest," as the US is aiming to reach certain levels of steel production to decrease its dependence on other countries.

Commenting on the recent volatility in the lira and economic instability in Turkey, Sanders said Turkish economic problems "are its own making" and are not the result of US actions.
