Ruble drops as Cohen hints at Russia probe info

The Russian currency traded near the session high on Wednesday against the dollar after Lanny Davis, Michael Cohen's lawyer, said his client could help special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. The former attorney of United States President Donald Trump has pleaded guilty to eight federal charges, prompting speculation he agreed to provide information about the suspected collusion with the Kremlin during the election campaign two years ago.

Meanwhile, a news report revealed the White House may impose punitive measures on companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project connecting Russia with Germany.

The greenback rallied 0.96% at 5:59 pm CET to 67.938 Russian rubles, after hitting 68.061, the strongest point since August 13. That day saw a 28-month peak. The euro jumped 1.44% to 78.9124 rubles, compared to the session high of 79.036. The level was last seen on April 11, when the joint currency briefly topped 80, for the first time since March 2016.
