Trudeau: Canada will only sign good NAFTA deal

Canada will only sign a "good" deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday. The Canadian prime minister emphasized his government will "always stand up for Canadians" and promised to be "constructive" in the continuing negotiations with the United States, but underscored Ottawa has been clear on its "red lines" regarding NAFTA.

Meanwhile, Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said her country and the US "are not there yet" on the deal regarding overhauling of the 1994 trade agreement. Freeland went on to say that even though her US counterpart, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has a good understanding of the Canadian position in the negotiations, the two sides began the talks "very far apart."

The negotiations are set to resume later in the day.
