Tech firms ask US for tariff protection

A group of tech companies sent a letter to United States Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer to ask for protection from tariffs on Chinese goods. Cisco Systems Inc., Dell, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Juniper Networks Inc. asked the Trump administration to reconsider protective measures on imports such as networking products and accessories, citing negative consequences on their employees and customers, among others.

"If USTR were to impose a 10-25 percent additional duty on networking products and accessories, it would cause broad, disproportionate economic harm to US interests, including our companies and US workers, our customers, US consumers, and broader US economic and strategic priorities," the companies stated. According to earlier reports, US President Donald Trump told his aides he wants to move ahead with imposing additional tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods as early as this week.
