Guajardo optimistic about US-Canada trade deal

There is a "high" chance of the United States and Canada reaching a trade deal, Secretary of Economy of Mexico Ildefonso Guajardo said on Wednesday as he spoke at the Mexico Economic Forum in Mexico City.

In August, US President Donald Trump announced the US struck a trade deal with Mexico. "We're going to call it the United States-Mexico trade agreement. We're going to get rid of NAFTA because it has a bad connotation," Trump said of the agreement. Mexico's Finance Minister Jose Antonio Gonzalez Anaya stated his country is ready to sign a bilateral trade agreement with the US to replace NAFTA in the event Canada fails to secure a deal with the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, negotiations with Ottawa on overhauling NAFTA resumed this week after being postponed over trade barriers Canada has on dairy imports from the US.
