Trump's adviser: US ready for Mexico deal without Canada

The United States is ready to proceed with the trade deal with Mexico in case a deal with Canada is not reached before the current deadline, which is the end of September, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers of United States President Donald Trump, Kevin Hassett (pictured left), said on Wednesday.

Talks between Washington and Ottawa on overhauling the trilateral North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are scheduled to resume later in the day, when Canada's Foreign Minister will meet with Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in the US capital. According to an earlier report, a senior Canadian official stated that Ottawa was willing to miss the deadline if an adequate deal was not reached.

Trump's economic adviser Larry Kudlow stated earlier that a dispute over Canada's quotas and tariffs on dairy products is preventing a deal between the two countries. Meanwhile, Mexico stated that it is willing to pursue a bilateral trade deal with the US, regardless of the outcome of talks with Ottawa.
