Volvo targets 2020 launch of e-trucks in N. America

AB Volvo or Volvo Group said it reached an agreement with California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and partners to start testing electric trucks next year. The aim is to commercialize the segment in North America in 2020, according to the statement published on Thursday.

The Swedish producer's unit for medium to heavy duty vehicles Volvo Trucks is preparing eight units with battery class 8 and 15 precommercial and commercial units for the South Coast Air Basin. It revealed the endeavor includes nontruck battery-electric equipment, nonproprietary chargers and solar power generation.

SCAQMD was awarded $44.8 million for the project, called Volvo Lights (Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions), from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The sixteen partners involved aim to "transform freight operations at the facilities of two of the United States' top trucking fleets." The technology is based on the Volvo FE Electric, presented in May and planned for launch in the European market next year, the press release adds.
