Kudlow: China can't 'break up allies'

Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, said on Monday that the United States is "sending China a message." Speaking to the media after the administration in Washington agreed with Canada to reform the North American Free Trade Agreement and call it the US–Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), he claimed the most populous nation won't be able "to break up the allies" and noted the improvements in dialogue with the European Union and Japan as well.

President Donald Trump "may perhaps" meet China's President Xi Jinping at the summit of the Group of 20 in Buenos Aires in two months, according to Kudlow. "We are showing them our progress around the world," the top official stated and added Trump spoke on the phone today with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and that the conversation was "great" and "very positive."

The US and Canada are "standing side by side." he added and cited progress on milk, wheat and vehicles, while revealing that import tariffs would be "dealt with later." Kudlow went on to warn a trade deal with China is not imminent. There "really hasn't been much progress recently," in his words.
