Juncker: UK is leaving the EU, not the other way round

Everyone negotiating the agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the exit of London from the bloc must keep in mind that it is the UK "that is leaving the Union, and not the Union exiting the UK," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said in an interview with Austrian media published on Saturday. Juncker pointed out that the EU and UK need to agree on "a political statement that will accompany the withdrawal agreement" and define their future relations.

The head of the commission added that a "no deal" Brexit should be avoided as it would benefit no one. He went on to explain that there is a strong will in the EU to reach a deal with London.

Juncker criticized the Cameron cabinet for asking the EU not to intervene in the 2016 referendum process and pointed out that the commission would have pointed towards important Brexit issues, had it been asked to do so prior to the vote. Asked if an exit from Brexit is possible, Juncker noted that is an issue for the British parliament and government.

The European Council will discuss Brexit on October 17.
