Kavanaugh confirmed as US Supreme Court justice

The United States Senate confirmed judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in a close vote on Saturday. A total of 50 voted in favor of the nomination while 48 voted against and 2 abstained. The roll call vote was interrupted a number of times by anti-Kavanaugh protesters.

Kavanaugh now joins John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Neil Gorsuch as a justice of the court. Kavanaugh is the second justice to be appointed by the Trump administration, as Gorsuch became a Supreme Court justice in April 2017. Kavanaugh joining the nine-member court means that five of the sitting justices were appointed by Republican presidents and four by Democrats.

Kavanaugh fills the vacancy left after the retirement of Anthony Kennedy.
