Volvo, Nvidia partner up on autonomous driving

Auto manufacturer Volvo Cars and American tech company Nvidia are partnering up on technology which would allow Volvo vehicles to be capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, the two companies said on Wednesday.

Nvidia's system-on-a-chip Drive AGX Xavier will be part of Volvo's next generation vehicles some time after 2020. The chip is capable of 30 trillion operations per second. Level 4 capability means that a car can drive itself but still has steering wheels and pedals so that a human can take control of the vehicle when needed. Volvo already offers level 2 autonomy in models such as XC60, however, the company said it would not offer level 3 capability.

"Your car will drive you and constantly watch out for you. Making this possible will require sensor architecture, AI [artificial intelligence] software, computing and safety technology like nothing the world has ever made," Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said during his keynote speech at a conference in Munich.
