Deal can be reached, Irish issue remains, May says

Brexit deal can be reached although the issue of the Irish backstop remains, United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday during her meeting with UK ambassador to the European Union Sir Tim Barrow in Brussels.

The prime minister, however, refused to answer questions regarding a one-year extension to the transition period, reiterating she feels a deal can be reached. May also didn't answer a question about whether Brussels would schedule a November summit to finalize Brexit negotiations.

Earlier, May's spokesperson stated London was not calling for an extension to the post-Brexit transition period past 2020 as was reported earlier.
