Macron says EU should have own army

French President Emmanuel Macron proposed on Tuesday that the European Union should create its own "real" military in order to become more self-reliant in defense, especially taking into account the withdrawal of the United States from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia.

"When I see (United States) President Trump announcing several weeks ago the withdrawal from a big disarmament treaty signed after the missile crisis in Europe, at the end of the 1980s, who is the main victim there? Europe and its security. No, I'm not exaggerating," he said in an interview with Europe 1 radio.

Macron went on to compare the current political climate in Europe to the period between two world wars. He specified that there is a parallel in how the economic and financial crisis is affecting the continent, together with a rise in nationalism.
