Dems urge Trump admin to save files on Russia probe, Sessions

Four Congress Democrats sent a letter to several members of the Trump administration, including FBI Director Christopher Wray, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, asking them to preserve all documents related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's work on the Russia probe, as well as on the "firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions."

"Committees of the United States Congress are conducting investigations parallel to those of the Special Counsel's office, and preservation of records is critical to ensure that we are able to do our work without interference or delay. Committees will also be investigating Attorney General Sessions' departure," the letter signed by Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feldstein and Representatives Jerrold Nadler, Adam Schiff and Elijah Cummings, who are ranking members of House Judiciary, Intelligence and Oversight and Government Reform Committees, respectively.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that Sessions quit as attorney general and noted Whitaker will serve as acting attorney general until a permanent replacement is named. Although the Trump administration insisted Sessions decided to resign, he was likely forced out by the president who has criticized him over Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe.
