NATO chief urges Russia to release ships

North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg demanded Russia put a stop to the latest conflict in the Sea of Azov, but denied Ukraine further support with regard to the request President Petro Poroshenko made to NATO last week, asking it to deploy warships.

The NATO chief called on the Kremlin to release the Ukrainian sailors and ships and "allow freedom of navigation and unhindered access to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov." Stoltenberg stated NATO has already boosted its presence in the Black Sea, "significantly more days with NATO ships at sea," adding that there is "more air policing." The alliance, he noted, "will continue to closely monitor the situation in that region."

Foreign ministers of member states will meet their Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin on December 4 to discuss the incident. Earlier, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu declined Poroshenko's request.
