Brexit vote delayed on backstop concern – May

British Prime Minister Theresa May told lawmakers on Monday that the meaningful vote on the Brexit agreement with the European Union would be postponed, but failed to announce another date. Speaking in the House of Commons, she vowed to secure further assurances on the backstop for the land border with Ireland. Furthermore, May said the government would accelerate preparations for the possibility that the United Kingdom leaves the bloc without a deal.

She acknowledged a disorderly withdrawal would cause short-term economic consequences. She accused those opposed to the deal and demanding another referendum that they want to divide the UK.
