Russia refuses to be dragged into arms race with US

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Thursday that Moscow does not intend to get involved in an arms race with the United States following Washington's decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Ryabkov insisted that Russia did everything in its power to preserve the nuclear deal, including taking "transparency measures beyond the treaty framework," but confirmed that Russia sent a note to Washington stating it is suspending its participation in the INF Treaty in response to the US decision. The official blasted the US for causing a "crushing blow" to strategic stability by suspending its obligations under the INF Treaty. On the other hand, he welcomed Washington's proposal for the two countries to sign a new treaty on intermediate-range nuclear forces.

Reflecting on the New START Treaty which is set to expire in 2021, Ryabkov claimed that Moscow still hasn't seen any desire from the US to extend the treaty, but hopes discussions on the matter will take place this year.
