McConnell hopes Trump will sign border deal

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said on Tuesday he hopes President Donald Trump would sign the bipartisan deal to keep the federal government open past February 15.

"I have recommended that if it becomes what we think it is, I do recommend he sign it," McConnell told reporters. "I think he's got a pretty good deal here," he added. "I'm hoping that he will sign this agreement," he underscored.

Earlier, lawmakers reached agreement on a government spending bill "in principle" to avoid another federal government shutdown. The deal includes around $1.4 billion for roughly 80 kilometers of new border barriers with Mexico, far below the $5.7 billion Trump demanded. However, the president said he is neither "happy" nor "thrilled" with the proposal.
