Russia prolongs detention of alleged US spy by 3 months

Paul Whelan, an American citizen charged with espionage in Russia, will stay in detention until May 28, before his trial, Russian agencies reported on Friday. His lawyer announced an appeal.

The Lefortovo District Court in Moscow brought the ruling behind closed doors and complied with the demand by the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Holding three more citizenships next to the United States - Irish, British and Canadian - Whelan is an employee at BorgWarner, a Michigan-based company, where he works as a security expert. He was arrested in Moscow on December 28, while allegedly engaging in "spy activity." He and his family claim he was in the Russian capital for a friend's wedding. According to Russian law, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
