Germany wants to regulate Nord Stream 2 - report

Germany has plans to regulate the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, media reported on Tuesday, citing a senior German official close to the matter. According to the report, Berlin intends to use its national sovereignty to see that the Russian-led project is executed correctly, bypassing some of the European Union's regulations.

The construction of the disputed pipeline caused many objections from both the EU and the United States. However, in February, German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that Berlin and Paris have reached a compromise regarding the regulation of the construction of the disputed pipeline, maintaining Germany's position as the main negotiator with Russia on this issue.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the pipeline project is facing "political objections," despite being a commercial project, "beneficial for business" and meant to ensure energy security of Europe.
