Europe starts lower, ECB's rate decision in focus

Shares in Europe traded in the red shortly after the opening bell on Thursday as traders awaited a rate change decision by the European Central Bank (ECB). ECB's president Mario Draghi is set to hold a press conference later in the day and update on the central bank's latest decision. Meanwhile, the state of play in US-China trade talks also has investors' attention as the outcome remains uncertain, especially following Huawei Technologies' decision to sue the American government over the ban on using the Chinese tech titan's products in federal agencies.

The DAX was down 0.37% shortly after the open as Thyssenkrupp lost 2.11%, the CAC 40 dropped 0.13% with Valeo's shares descending 2.14%, while the FTSE 100 declined 0.31%, dragged down by Rio Tinto's stocks plummeting 7.72%.

The euro traded flat against the US dollar, to go for 1.1308 at 9:12 am CET.
