Barnier: EU ready to offer UK unilateral exit from customs union

European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Friday that the bloc is ready to offer the United Kingdom the option to unilaterally decide on leaving the customs union as long as the other elements of the Irish backstop provision are preserved, which means Northern Ireland would stay in the customs union. He noted Brussels does not plan to keep the UK in the customs union "against its will."

In a briefing to EU27 ambassadors, Barnier noted that talks with UK Attorney General Geoffrey Cox didn't result in any progress in Brexit negotiations. "We are not interested in the blame game, we are interested in the result. We are still working," the EU official added.

Earlier, UK Prime Minister Theresa May described ongoing talks with Brussels as "difficult and robust" and said that it is not in the bloc's interest to make the Irish backstop permanent. May also warned that the Uk may "never leave" the EU unless her withdrawal agreement is backed by Parliament.
