EU to delay Brexit until May 22 if MPs approve deal - reports

The European Union is willing to extend the United Kingdom's departure from the bloc until May 22 on the condition that the UK Parliament approves Prime Minister Theresa May's withdrawal agreement next week, according to a leak of the draft European Council summit conclusions. However, the EU would not agree to an extension beyond May 22 since the UK expressed the desire not to take part in the EU elections, which begin the day after.

The leaked draft also reveals that the Council is set to "approve the instrument relating to the Withdrawal Agreement and the joint statement supplementing the Political Declaration agreed between the European Commission and the UK in Strasbourg on 11 March 2019." However, the EU will add that "any unilateral statement should be compatible with the letter and spirit of the withdrawal agreement," which is likely a reference to possible concessions given by the UK government to the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) regarding the Irish backstop.
