McDonald's buys Israeli AI company for $300M

McDonald's has acquired Israeli artificial intelligence company Dynamic Yield for $300 million, media reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

The deal, which is the fast food's giant first in several years and its biggest in the last two decades, will see it utilize the Israeli company's technology to personalize its digital drive-thru menu displays based on factors such as the weather and time of day. For example, customers placing orders in hot conditions could be offered McFlurry ice creams while those ordering breakfast could be offered Sausage McMuffins. The technology will also determine how busy a certain restaurant is and on that basis suggest food that is quicker to prepare if it is busy or more elaborate fare during quieter spells.

McDonald's will introduce the technology at its branches in the United States this year before expanding to overseas locations. The company also confirmed that it would be used in its restaurants as well as on mobile phones. Commenting on the acquisition, McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook said that "this technology has the capability and the flexibility to work on all of our digital platforms."
