Grassley: Trump demands aluminum, steel quotas

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance Chuck Grassley said to reporters he recently learned the United States administration still doesn't intend to roll back tariffs imposed on import steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico. Speaking in Washington on Wednesday, Grassley (pictured left) revealed Director of the White House National Trade Council Peter Navarro told him negotiations shifted to quotas for purchases after the US–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) replaced the NAFTA regime.

Grassley also said that in the same meeting two weeks ago, President Donald Trump (right) asserted that he wouldn't cut the levies. The US charges 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum as it withdrew initial exemptions last year. Some consider quotas to be "worse than tariffs," the senator stressed. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer was present, he claimed.
