Xi calls for 'strategic leadership' in letter to Trump

"I hope the economic and trade teams of both nations can wrap up negotiations on the text as early as possible," Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump in a letter delivered by Vice Premier of China Liu He, saying that the trade deal should be based on the principle of "mutual respect and benefit."

Xi expressed hope that the relations between Beijing and Washington can continue to develop in a "healthy and stable" manner, noting that such a course of action is in the interest of both Chinese and American citizens. In order to do so, the Chinese leader noted, "strategic leadership is needed."

US leader stated earlier that the trade deal with Beijing is "not ready yet" after noting that the negotiations on a deal that would end the months-long trade dispute are "coming along well," confirming previous comments from US Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Myron Brilliant.
