Prosecutors to sue Vale over dam collapse

Brazilian prosecutors plan to file criminal charges against the mining giant Vale and its employees following a dam collapse at a company mine earlier this year that killed some 300 people, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The lead prosecutor Jose Aderrcio Leite Sampaio said investigators gathered enough evidence to show that Vale employees knew the dam was unsafe. "At this point, we know that the operational side knew [that the dam was at risk of collapse], but did Vale’s directors know?" Sampaio said and added that in the next couple of months prosecutors are expected to determine whether senior Vale officials knew the dam was at risk of collapse. Officials are also preparing possible criminal charges against the German inspection firm TUV SUD that said the dam was safe just four months before it collapsed. Sampaio said that individuals at Vale could be charged with that crime as well.
