Notre Dame's main structure saved - officials

The "worst has been avoided" after firefighters managed to save Notre Dame Cathedral's landmark rectangular towers and stop the fire from spreading, French President Emmanuel Macron said. "We will rebuild Notre Dame together," Macron added while announcing an international fundraising campaign.

"We can consider that the main structure of Notre-Dame has been saved and preserved," Paris fire commander Jean-Claude Galled said and added that one firefighter was injured and that the fire has been stopped from spreading to the northern belfry.

French prosecutors said that the preliminary investigation showed that the fire started accidentally. Rector of Notre-Dame, Patrick Jacquin, told local media that the Crown of Thorns and the Tunic of St Louis have both been recovered but that the fate of many other priceless artifacts housed inside is uncertain.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said it is closely following the situation with the centuries-old Notre Dame Cathedral. "UNESCO is closely following the situation and stands together with France to protect and restore this World Heritage Site," UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay tweeted.
