Notre Dame fire under control - firefighters

The Notre Dame Cathedral fire is now under control, a spokesperson for the Paris fire brigade said on Tuesday. Around 400 firefighters took several hours to deal with the flames and save the 850-year-old church.

"The fire is completely under control. It is partially extinguished, there are residual fires to put out," the spokesperson stated, adding that the extent of the damage is "tragic" and includes the entire roof, the wooden framework, and the spire, which collapsed during the night. The fire started around 7 pm local time and its cause is currently unknown, although preliminary findings indicated it was started accidentally, rather than as a result of arson or a terror-related plot. The cathedral was undergoing renovations before the incident.
