Widodo declares victory in Indonesia elections

Indonesia President Joko Widodo declared victory in the country's elections, noting he secured a second term in office by winning 54% of the votes. Widodo added that he has already received congratulatory messages from over 20 leaders from other countries in the region and around the world.

"We must wait for the official result. But 12 pollsters have given clear results... we convey that the Jokowi-Maruf ticket got 54.5% of the vote while Prabowo got 45.5%," Widodo said during a press conference in Jakarta. The results were based on a quick count of all sample polling stations around the country by survey organizations, a method which proved accurate in earlier elections. Earlier, Widodo's rival Prabowo Subianto claimed his campaign counted that he had won 62% of the votes.

The official results will be released by the country's General Election Commission by May 22.
