Sri Lanka says local jihadi group behind Easter attacks

The government of Sri Lanka announced on Monday that the extremist group behind the series of coordinated blasts that rocked the country on Easter is the National Thowheed Jamath.

Officials additionally admitted to a massive intelligence failure as authorities were alerted about the attacks two weeks beforehand and had the names of the attackers. However, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was not notified.

A second warning came a day before the attacks took place across the country, while the third alert came 10 minutes before the deadly blasts. "On the 9th of April, the chief of national intelligence wrote a letter and in this letter, many of the names of the members of the terrorist organization were written down," cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said. "The prime minister was not informed by these letters and revelations," he added.

The local jihadi group is believed to have carried out the multiple terror attacks on Easter Sunday, killing at least 290 people and wounding more than 400.
