Consumer groups, unions welcome Asda, Sainsbury merger failure

Consumer group Which? and Unite union welcomed the failure of the merger between J Sainsbury plc and Asda Group Ltd on Thursday.

In a statement, Which? head Caroline Normand said: "The CMA is right to block this merger, which could have reduced competition in the sector resulting in a number of problems for shoppers including increased prices, reduced quality and choice, and a poorer shopping experience." She also added that Walmart-owned Asda and Sainsbury's have "fallen behind" discount supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi.

Meanwhile, United National Officer Bev Clarkson pointed out that a merger would have caused significant job uncertainty.

Earlier in the day, the British competition authority blocked the merger of the two supermarkets.
